Since the adoption of the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1972, over seven hundred sites have been identified and declared as the inalienable heritage of humanity. These sites range from natural sanctuaries and man-made landscapes to whole urban centres, archaeological areas and individual monuments.

With this book, Skira and UNESCO are beginning a series of three volumes devoted to the illustration and description of these places, with a view to establishing them increasingly as a shared and universal heritage of contemporary culture.

This first volume, devoted specifically to archaeological areas and urban centres, focuses on forty-six emblematic instances of diverse geographic, cultural, and historic sites, providing them with a clear, well-documented explanatory text, enriched with brief in-depth entry texts and a significant selection of pictures with specific captions, rich in information.

With this instrument for learning and understanding, and through a particularly rich array of images, places of all sorts, distant in time and space, can be found together in a single, clear, and fascinating collection devoted to the complex paths of human history and culture: a true heritage of every nation and every individual.
