After almost fifteen years of intensive work, UNESCO presents an entirely revised and updated edition of this major work in seven volumes. The new edition, now called History of Humanity, is a radical new work providing an account of cultural and scientific achievements in the light of new facts and methods of historiographical investigation. This major undertaking required an International Commission and the co-operation of some 450 distinguished specialists, in a great number of disciplines, from all over the world. A truly interdisciplinary work, the History of Humanity sheds new light on many hitherto unknown features of our common past.

Volume VII explores the transformations that swept through all spheres of human activity during the twentieth century, which was marked by scientific, technological, social and political innovation. Against this background, it examines the liberation movements and conflicts that led to the dismantling of the major colonial systems, as well as the phenomenon of ‘globalization’, or growing interdependence among nations. With contributions from an international team of specialists, the volume is a unique resource that provides a broad range of perspectives. The text is complemented by maps and illustrations, and will be an invaluable source of information for students and scholars of history and anthropology.
