This groundbreaking work was the first of its type to present the entire history of the African continent. The collection sheds light on the pre-colonial era and interweaves Africa’s destiny with the rest of humanity’s, examining its interaction with other continents and the role of Africans in the dialogue between civilizations. Published in eight volumes.

Volume II deals with the period beginning at the close of the Neolithic era, from around the eighth millennium before our era. This period of some 9,000 years of history has been sub-divided into four major geographical zones, following the pattern of African historical research. Chapters 1 to 12 cover the corridor of the Nile, Egypt and Nubia. Chapters 13 to 16 relate to the Ethiopian highlands. Chapters 17 to 20 describe the part of Africa later called the Magrhib and its Saharan hinterland. Chapters 21 to 29, the rest of Africa as well as some of the islands of the Indian Ocean.

Volume I: Methodology and African Prehistory
Volume III: Africa from the Seventh to the Eleventh Century
Volume IV: Africa from the Twelfth to the Sixteenth Century
Volume V: Africa from the Sixteenth to the Eighteenth Century
Volume VI: Africa in the Nineteenth Century until the 1880s
